Organisations operating in today's hyper-competitive environment are striving to develop sustainable competitive advantages. One view suggests that companies may create a sustainable advantage via inimitable, non-substitutable, rare, and valuable resources and capabilities. A related view proposes that knowledge development and deployment is the source of a truly sustainable competitive advantage. Yet, no one skill or capability ensures that a competitive advantage is sustained over the long term. Instead, organisations must routinely, and without hesitation, demolish and reconstruct their core competencies to retain leadership positions within their industries. These concepts of singular resources and knowledge development and deployment are inexorably linked to the constant creation and execution of new best practices.

The adoption and implementation of best practices offer a number of competitive advantages. Prior research has noted that when best practices are utilised throughout the organisation, these practices are indicative of a common performance mindset. "When performance mindsets are widely shared, they translate established company values into practices by means of commonly understood guidelines on how to recognize and solve problems - which, in turn, guide the organisation in making decisions when faced with many possibilities".

However, the unique characteristics of services industries - intangibility, heterogeneity, perishability, and inseparability - generate greater challenges for service firms seeking to implement innovative ideas. These traits and the complexity of the relationships among owners, management companies, brands, and other key associates combine to make the selection and implementation of best practices far more difficult than in most other businesses. Consequently, service industries, especially the hospitality industry, have traditionally been viewed as slow to develop and adopt inventive concepts. Yet, the very traits and convoluted relationships which make the hotel industry so challenging mean that the adoption and adaptation of best practices are even more critical to the long-term performance and viability of these lodging companies.

The study at hand was undertaken to surface best practices in the hospitality industry in Asia and celebrate those industry leaders who are willing to share their practices. It is hoped that the study will make a modest contribution in helping the industry reach a higher level of professionalism through the process of benchmarking.

Asia is currently the region in the world with the highest growth potential for tourism. While this is welcome news for its hospitality industry, the growth prospects come with new challenges. Among these is the industry’s collective ability to attract, train, develop and retain the talent for the many fast-growing hospitality firms and operations in the region.

The challenge for educators and trainers is not only to facilitate the development of analytical skills and knowledge among new entrants and current managers in the industry. In the dynamic and diverse environments that characterize the Asian hospitality industry today, the challenge is also to develop future talents that would be in the vanguard of new innovative hospitality practices in Asia. The case study as a pedagogical tool that bridges the gap between knowledge and contexts, engages students in a learning journey that helps them think more deeply about creating the next layer of innovations for their organisations.

The case studies in this collection are based on actual situations faced by practising managers in the hospitality industry in Asia. While each case focuses on some specific issues in management, the cases are anchored in the contexts in which these problems and challenges arose and as such, reflect the complex and multi-dimensional reality faced by practising managers.
