The Asian Business Case Centre (ABCC), in partnership with Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management, conducted a ground-breaking study on the best practices in the Asian hotel industry. This industry-wide survey identified and recognised Best Practice Champions across all segments of the industry in Asia.
The hospitality industry in Asia has grown tremendously over the last two decades in tandem with the growth in regional economies. Tourism has become a significant contributor to the GDP of many Asian countries and this has led to a boom in the number, types and range of hotel accommodations in Asian countries to cater for tourists as well as business travellers in the region.
The goal of this study was to facilitate the advancement of the hotel industry at large by highlighting innovative best practices of a broad spectrum of hotel facilities, from economy to five-star. These best practices focused on the areas of human resource management, training and development, general management, operations, corporate social responsibility, environmental issues, and information technology.
The research on best practices in the Asian hotel industry studied best practice champions in detail to analyse the importance of their best practices. The researchers have compiled the case analyses into a book titled "Exploring Best Practices in the Hospitality Industry in Asia" in the hope that the best practice champions could showcase and share their best practices. We believe that this will enable the best practice champions to showcase and share their best practices with others in the lodging industry.
The study closely followed the approach of the earlier ground-breaking study by Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration on "Best Practices in the United States Lodging Industry" published in 1999.
