| Abstract |
The case was prepared as a basis for class discussion and is designed for undergraduate tourism/leisure management programmes, but may be relevant to related disciplines such as marketing and for some postgraduate courses. It offers insights into the demands of launching a major arts complex and certain aspects of arts tourism. The background to the opening of a new large-scale arts venue in Singapore is described within the context of an official strategy to promote arts generally and as a tourist attraction. Facilities on offer are explained and information about management provided, with attention also given to the responses of the local arts community and residents. Analysis of the material reveals the challenges facing management in pursuit of success and suggests the importance of the arts socially and commercially. Interesting topics to debate are identified in the teaching notes and a possible approach to teaching is outlined.
