Case Title Setting Up a Small Scale Tourism Business
Case Author(s) Joan C. Henderson
University Nanyang Technological University
Abstract The case is made up of profiles of ten different new small tourism businesses and summarises their performance in the 1990s. It includes information about starting up and early challenges from the perspective of the owners, moving on to the positions arrived at by early 1997. Additional material is provided in a subsequent section which describes the companies after another year's operation, by which time some have failed or shown disappointing results. Used with students on undergraduate travel, tourism and leisure courses, it serves to illustrate the opportunities for new ventures in this sector of the industry as well as potential problems. Determinants of success and failure can thus be explored in a series of seminars with associated project work which requires students to devise and present their own Business Plan for an original tourism enterprise. *Abstract reprinted with the permission of the European Case Clearing House*
