Abstract This case study of Singapore’s hog auction market (HAM) describes the implementation of an electronic market to promote market efficiency and social objectives in the pig trading industry. It highlights the issues and realities of using electronic markets strategically and provides the researcher with an example of how government agencies can use IT to regulate the structure of industries for social and other regulatory objectives. The impacts of HAM on the pig trading industry in Singapore are described and lessons relevant for implementing electronic markets in other contexts are discussed.
