Abstract This case involves Bintan Resorts, a large scale integrated beach resort project on the Indonesian island of Bintan. It begins by acknowledging the importance of the concept of integrated resorts and their growing popularity, moving on to consider the particular example of Bintan. The background to the project, the characteristics and facilities of the site, its management and performance are all described. An account follows of the challenges arising in the late 1990s when the resort faced a series of difficulties, several of which were outside its control. Questions are raised about tourism planning and management, and the case provides an opportunity for class discussion on a range of topics including the impacts of tourism, resort development and the operation of facilities within an international context. *Abstract reprinted with the permission of the European Case Clearing House*
