Abstract: |
By June 2001, the World Wide Fund for Nature in Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) had grown into a non-government organization (NGO) with hundreds of projects all over the country, involving a commitment of millions of rupees against projects (secured funding). Over the period up to 2005, WWF-Pakistan anticipated that total income (and commitments) would grow to Rs. 1 billion, of which Rs. 190 million had been secured. However, this rapid growth had also highlighted existing and potential areas for concern as far as financial management was concerned. This case examines a variety of financing techniques for NGOs, as well as the risks attached to these techniques in a socially, economically and politically volatile environment. The case also introduces the control (accounting and reporting) framework in which not-for-profit organizations operate in a developing country like Pakistan. Students learn to understand ethical and moral issues that affect the environment, the importance of different sources of funding, the need to manage funds effectively, and the need for constant revisions of budgets and projections. They also learn to appreciate the importance of support systems, including accounting, reporting, technology and human resources. These elements become especially important if the organization is growing rapidly. And lastly, students should also appreciate the legal restrictions on NGOs/not-for-profit organizations in terms of fund raising. |
