Abstract:

This disguised case is about the challenges faced by Saba Ahmad in her job at First Multinational Bank. The bank was undergoing a high turnover of employees and Mr. Zahid Khan, Corporate Head, had recruited Saba partly to handle the turnover problem and partly to get a better gender balance in the organization. Saba was recruited for the Karachi office, and while her career has progressed, the pace has been slow and she feels that this may be the result of inbuilt male biases in the organization. As a single mother Saba faces tremendous challenges both at the office and more importantly outside the office during networking parties. Saba has now gotten engaged to a gentleman working in Islamabad and, consequently, she wants to move to the Islamabad office. Mr Khan feels that she may not be ready for Islamabad as the work requirements at Islamabad will present even more challenges to Saba and might hurt both her and the organization. He needs to decide what to do with her request of transfer. The case exposes participants to explicit and implicit hurdles that female managers face in modern organizations and how they negotiate their lives in these challenging circumstances. The differences in the world views of male and female employees will be touched upon within the context of an immediate managerial decision.
