Abstract:

Zindagi Foundation has been working on HIV/AIDS Awareness Project in the Red Light area of Lahore since the past five years. Nisar Johnson, Project Director, gave a proposal to establish a primary school for children of commercial sex workers because at that time no other NGO was working on education for children of commercial sex workers. The idea was approved by the board members, and Nisar Johnson started work on the project with the help of some volunteers. He conducted a survey before starting a school for the children of commercial sex workers in the Red Light area in November 2005. Two teachers were hired from the Red Light area who were committed to start this school. Nisar Johnson also gave them the task to motivate the parents to provide education to their children.

A dramatic decrease in the attendance was observed after the summer vacations. In February 2007, Zindagi Foundation conducted a study to find out why school dropouts were increasing among children of the Red light Area Lahore.
