Abstract:

In June 2005, Shermeen Alam, Director of Centre of Mentally and Physically Affected Special Students (COMPASS), a non-profit Lahore-based organization for children with special needs, was studying the minutes of the annual meeting. Shermeen felt excited about the goals that had been set by her team namely the construction of a new purpose-built facility and the establishment of a teacher-training centre. She was also apprehensive how these goals would be achieved since the monthly cost per child had recently gone up in view of salary increases of the teaching staff. In the absence of any reliable source of funding, finances were becoming a constant struggle for COMPASS. Shermeen had to formulate a strategy to achieve the objectives set by the team before the next meeting in two weeks.
