Abstract: |
On the eve of her retirement Mrs. Nasim Taslimullah, principal, Government College of Home Economics (CHE), Lahore is worried about the future of the newly established Department of Development and Continuing Education (DDCE) at CHE. The Department was established, against the wishes of some senior staff members, by Nasim and Dr Rukhsana Zia to undertake community development activities and thus provide relevant and rich experience to the staff and students. Two projects signed with international donor agencies are underway. However, Dr Zia has left to join a position at UNESCO, France and now Nasim herself is retiring. The department does not receive any financing from the Government of Punjab, CHE's parent institution. And it is uncertain whether the government sees these activities as mainstream CHE activities. In any case the Government is strapped for cash. The few staff members who are working on the signed projects are demoralized because of the uncertainty. Mrs. Taslimullah is wondering whether she could have approached the idea of the department differently to provide it long-term sustainability.
