Abstract: |
Covering the growth and development of the Indian bicycle industry, the case documents the market and financial performance of Tube Investments of India Ltd (TI), a leading manufacturer of bicycles, steel tubes and strips. During the 1990s, its three divisions faced serious problems in gaining market share, improving quality and productivity, and achieving business growth. As a result, the return to shareholders declined from 13.9 percent in 1992 to 4 percent in 1996-97. The new president had tough challenge on hand when a leading consultant recommended divesting the bicycles and steel tubes divisions that were unattractive to boost the sagging share price, which declined from 341 in 1994 to 31.50 in 1998. What are the strategic options for the new president to stage TI's turnaround? |
